So WTF? Did I miss something here? Why did ALL OF A SUDDEN the complete community that is DA start
flipping out! about the sorting system and front page of the website?
Why? Because a
DeviantArt 'celebrity' decided to flip out so everyone else has too?
First off, DA's "new system" isn't new. It's been this way for almost a year now and the newest piece is the collections feature which just began recently.
Well, lets back this up, the complaints here are because some idiot submitted an animated gif of a stick figure humping the words, "YOUR MOM". Human beings, as idiotic as they are, faved this image like 3,000 times and it ends up on the front page. Aside from the fact that this image didn't even belong to the "artist", it was stolen off the internet somewhere, this all goes back to the general population.
DA, itself, does not really have control of what'll end up on the front page or even in the first few pages of what's popular today. We, the members of DeviantArt, control it. DA's system runs off of numbers and it just reads off what the users view, comment and fave and the image moves up the list. That's it. Instead of blaming DA, blame the 3,000 users who're faving ridiculous images.
Somehow all this got mixed up into popularity and pageviews and the ongoing "real art" versus Anime and fanart.
Art is ultimately up to an individual's personal taste. At least in my opinion.
People complain constantly about other users who have tons and tons of watchers and faves and pageviews and say "well I can do better art than them, why do I only have like 30 pageviews" Also the "how come I see this artist's fan art all over the front page when I can draw photo realistic portraits and I've only had like 3 faves total!?"
These artists are drawing what they like drawing and what their fans want to see. And it's working for them. More power to them, I say. Yeah it's kind of unfair when you think of what this website is supposed to be about but, DA can't deny anyone from joining. If you have a fan artist, they're going to post their stuff. And don't complain about seeing it all over the place because YOU and your fellow Deviants are putting it there on the front page!
If you're bothered by DAs sorting system then go though others galleries and collections. That's really why they're there When you find an artist who's style you like go through their favorites gallery! I have spent HOURS AND HOURS doing this most of what's in my favorites and collections right now is not from going through the front page it's by going through the favorites of the artists I'm watching and then so on from there.
And as for being popular, a majority of the "popular Deviants" here actually have pure talent. I'm sure some of them were lucky enough just to submit something and then drown in instant fame but, I'm sure the rest really did work their asses off.
I'm not about to call myself ' popular ' but I don't see myself as unknown either. I've been a member since 2003. Only in the past 6months or so have I actually been "noticed". You know how this happened? [besides the fact that there is now a computer that is actively involved in my life now :/] I whored my self out!
I spammed the Thumbshare Forums, I browse and comment on bunches of things, I faved what I liked fro whatever reason, I joined clubs, Just recently I put out my line art for people to color and look how many people volunteered in a day! I', constantly clicking the RANDOM DEVIANT link at the bottom of the screen there and literally just left a comment on their profile saying "Hello

" It gets them visiting my page everytime! And that's not a selfish thing to do at all because that's how I've found alot of artists that are on my personal watch list. I mean really, that's how I found *
skaffa and ~
theirison Who are two of my favorite artists right now.
Quickly back to what I said about those "popular Deviants" doing art their fans/watchers want to see... My most faved works are my
Snack Monsters. I DOODLED
Matinee Snack after having my very first 'Hot Dog on a Stick' while I was waiting to watch *Snakes on a Plane!* And after I drew
Sunny-Sicle on a hot day in Arizona and I had 10+ faves and 5 new watches in less than a week, I knew I had something. lol SRSLYWTF!? Do I think I have better art in my gallery. Oh hell yes but, do I also think that I should go out and find a new set of paint pens so I can make more Snack Monsters? Very Much so because it's what at least a handful of my watchers like. What's great is that I know that even though a lot of my watchers and visitors came to my gallery because they saw a Snack Monster, they come back because they like my art as a whole.
I've rambled on long enough... this all comes down to what *

Deviantart is just a website If you really care about art, passionately, and its what you want to do, then just do it. You have to work hard, develop you skills, go to local art shows, network, just throw your self out there! Yes, it's nice to log in everyday and see a new fave or watcher or see that pageveiw number go up but, no one outside DA gives a shit. Not even on DA do people give a shit. No one is going to stumble on to your page and be like "oh, they only have 439 pageviews, they must suck" and move on!
Ugh, I don't have much more to say about this without going in circle. To wrap this up:
The DeviantArt staff is not controlling the front page and what's "popular". You and your fellow Deviants are. Love your watchers and the artists you are watching, they are all that matter. If you want to be "big", throw yourself out there both here in the community and in the real world.
